Olivia Penrod accepts her award with a hand shake from
Mr. Henry Whitfield, Director of the Coastal Georgia Center
The Coastal Georgia Center is proud to announce the Graduate Student of the Year Award, which celebrates the best graduate student of our facility. The Award is presented to a graduate student who is making an impact in training, education, community service or economic development in his or her field of study.
The Graduate Student of the Year for 2008 is Olivia Penrod, who is an education counselor at Fort Stewart in Hinesville. She is pursuing a doctorate in education with an emphasis in higher education administration. At Fort Stewart she guides troops pursuing their educational goals, ensuring they will be prepared to enter the work force. Congratulations on all of your wonderful hard work supporting our troops Olivia!
Consuela accepts her award moments before she gives
a 'cutting-edge' theoretical presentation to her class
Our runner-up is Consuela Ward Pender, who directs the Multi-Cultural Center at Georgia Southern University. She is pursuing her doctorate in education with an emphasis in curriculum studies. She shared with the staff her interest in the most current theoretical questions in her field, particularly Critical Race Theory. On campus she seeks to involve students in a diverse environment which goes beyond a single, celebratory month. The CGC staff expects to see more good work from Consuela, congratulations!
Both Ms. Penrod and Ms. Pender have accomplished significant course-work toward their graduate degrees at the Coastal Georgia Center.
The Coastal Georgia Center is a University System of Georgia facility and is operated by Georgia Southern University in partnership with Armstrong Atlantic State University and Savannah State University. Georgia Southern University offers graduate programs in accounting, business and education, while Savannah State University hosts graduate programs in social work, urban studies and public administration. Both offer competitive graduate degrees in the heart of downtown Savannah, so you can study where you work.
In addition to graduate classes, all three partner universities, as well as many community, state and national organizations, host non-credit programs and conferences at the Center.
Once again, we would like to thank all of the great applicants we received for the 2008 year, and also a special thanks to our two very impressive winners!
